Mellors Group Backs Urgent Calls to Improve Nottingham–Skegness Rail Service

Mellors Group has thrown its support behind growing calls for urgent improvements to the Nottingham–Skegness rail service, warning that unreliable transport links are holding back tourism and economic growth across Lincolnshire.

The Nottingham-based leisure operator, which owns and operates Fantasy Island and Skegness Pier, says better rail connectivity is essential to unlocking the full potential of one of the UK’s most popular seaside destinations.

Rising Concerns Over Rail Reliability

Support for improvements comes amid a growing public campaign, including a widely shared petition, calling for action after reports revealed a 153% increase in service cancellations on the route.

The figures have sparked concern among both residents and visitors, particularly during peak holiday periods when demand is at its highest.

For many travellers, especially those without access to a car, the Nottingham–Skegness line is a vital link to the coast. However, increasing disruption has raised serious questions around:

  • Reliability of services
  • Capacity during peak seasons
  • Accessibility for tourists and day visitors

We fully support the calls for urgent improvements to the Nottingham to Skegness rail service.

Lincolnshire is a hugely important tourism destination, but if people can’t get here easily, it limits the potential of the entire area.

A reported 153% increase in cancellations shows there is clearly an issue that needs addressing. For visitors planning a day out or short break, reliability is critical and at the moment, that confidence just isn’t there.

We’ve invested millions into Fantasy Island and Skegness Pier and continue to do so because we believe in the future of this region. But investment alone isn’t enough. We need the infrastructure to match.

The current rail service doesn’t reflect the demand, particularly during peak seasons.

For an area that relies so heavily on tourism, making it easier, quicker and more reliable for visitors to travel here has to be a priority.

This isn’t just about one business. It’s about supporting the wider local economy, from attractions and hospitality to independent retailers and accommodation providers.

There’s a real opportunity here, but it requires action.

Wider Impact on the Local Economy

The company, which supports over 300 local jobs, says this issue goes far beyond individual attractions.

Improved rail services could deliver significant benefits, including:

  • Increased visitor numbers to the coast
  • Reduced road congestion during peak travel times
  • Greater support for local businesses and accommodation providers
  • Encouragement of more sustainable travel options

A Growing Campaign for Change

With continued investment in Skegness and Ingoldmells, Mellors Group believes demand for travel to the area is already strong — but without improved infrastructure, opportunities may be missed.

The campaign is gaining momentum, with residents, businesses, and visitors all being encouraged to support the push for change.

As one of the UK’s most recognisable seaside destinations, Skegness continues to attract millions of visitors each year. But as Mellors Group makes clear, investment in attractions must be matched by investment in infrastructure.

Without urgent improvements to the Nottingham–Skegness rail line, the long-term growth of Lincolnshire’s tourism economy could be at risk.
