What Could Replace Rumba Rapids at Thorpe Park? Fans Have Theories

Thorpe Park recently confirmed the permanent closure of its long-running water ride Rumba Rapids, ending nearly four decades of operation. The attraction originally opened in 1987 as Thunder River and remained a staple of the park’s lineup until the end of the 2025 season, closing after 39 years of splashing riders.

While the park has not yet announced what will replace it, the closure has already sparked plenty of speculation among theme park fans. With a large plot of land suddenly available in the Jungle area, enthusiasts have begun sharing theories about what the future could hold.

Here are some of the most popular ideas circulating among fans.

Why Did Rumba Rapids Close?

Rumba Rapids had been a fixture at Thorpe Park for generations, but the ride had struggled with operational challenges in recent years.

River rapids attractions are expensive to run due to the number of staff required and the complex water-pumping systems needed to keep the ride operating safely.

Industry safety changes following incidents on similar rides also increased operational requirements across the UK.

With the attraction ageing and occupying a large footprint, the park ultimately decided not to reopen it for the 2026 season. The park stated that it is “always reviewing our line-up of world-class rides and attractions”, but has not revealed what will replace it yet.

That uncertainty has only fuelled speculation.

Fan Theory #1: A Major New Roller Coaster

One of the most common theories is that the site could eventually host another major roller coaster.

Thorpe Park has positioned itself as the UK’s thrill capital, and the success of Hyperia—the UK’s tallest and fastest coaster—shows the park’s commitment to record-breaking attractions.

Fans believe the Rumba Rapids site could offer enough room for:

  • A compact launch coaster
  • A Mack multi-launch
  • A themed family thrill coaster

Because the area sits between several existing rides, some enthusiasts think a terrain-hugging coaster weaving through the Jungle area could fit the space well.

Fan Theory #2: A Next-Generation Water Ride

Although Rumba Rapids is gone, water rides remain popular in theme parks.

Some fans think Thorpe Park could replace it with a modern water attraction, such as:

  • A log flume with larger drops
  • A shoot-the-chutes ride
  • A trackless water dark ride

This could keep the park’s water ride lineup balanced alongside Tidal Wave, which is currently the park’s only major splash attraction.

A newer water ride could also use less space and be cheaper to operate than an ageing rapids system.

Fan Theory #3: A New Themed Area

Because the rapids ride covered a large area, some fans believe the park could use the land for a whole new mini-land rather than just one attraction.

Possible ideas discussed in the community include:

  • A tropical adventure area expansion
  • A high-energy festival theme
  • A horror-inspired thrill zone

Thorpe Park has already been refreshing its areas in recent years, including the transformation of Angry Birds Land into Big Easy Boulevard, so further theming changes wouldn’t be surprising.

Fan Theory #4: A Multi-Ride Expansion

Another theory is that the park could split the plot into several smaller attractions.

Instead of one headline ride, the area could feature:

  • A family coaster
  • A flat ride
  • New food and retail
  • Additional seating and landscaping

This approach would increase capacity and give Thorpe Park more attractions overall—something many fans feel the park needs during peak days.

What Is Most Likely?

Right now, Thorpe Park has not confirmed any plans for the Rumba Rapids site.

However, based on the park’s direction in recent years, the most likely options seem to be:

  1. A new roller coaster to build on the park’s thrill reputation
  2. A modern water attraction that is easier to operate
  3. A redeveloped themed zone combining rides and entertainment

Given the size of the land and Thorpe Park’s focus on major attractions, many fans believe the site could eventually host another headline ride.

One thing is certain: after nearly 40 years, Rumba Rapids has left behind a big gap—and whatever replaces it will be one of the park’s most closely watched projects.
