John Burton, one of the most influential creative figures at Merlin Entertainments, announces that he is no longer working with the company.

For theme park fans across the UK, Burton’s departure marks the end of an era. Over the past decade, he has been behind some of Merlin’s most ambitious and creative projects, helping to reshape experiences across major parks including Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, and Chessington World of Adventures.
From groundbreaking roller coasters to immersive storytelling attractions, Burton played a central role in several headline projects that have defined the modern era of Merlin parks.

After almost a decade at Merlin I’ve decided to hang up my wizards hat. I have so many memories to look back on, and I want to say a big thank you to all those who were there for me along the way!
One of Burton’s most recent and widely discussed projects was Hyperia, the flagship roller coaster that opened at Thorpe Park in 2024.
Standing as the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the UK, Hyperia quickly became a headline attraction and a major milestone for the park. Burton helped shape not only the ride’s concept but also its broader narrative and thematic identity, centred around the mythological figure Hyperia — symbolising strength and ambition.

Curse at Alton Manor – Reinventing a Classic
In 2023, Burton was also instrumental in delivering Curse at Alton Manor, the dramatic reimagining of the former Duel attraction at Alton Towers.
The attraction replaced the laser-shooting gameplay of Duel with a fully narrative-driven haunted dark ride, telling the tragic story of Emily Alton and the supernatural events surrounding the Alton Manor.
The transformation was widely praised by fans for its:
- Enhanced storytelling
- New practical effects and projection technology
- Completely redesigned ride experience
It showed Merlin’s growing focus on immersive storytelling rather than simple ride upgrades.
Nemesis Reborn – Reviving an Icon
Another huge milestone was the 2024 relaunch of Nemesis Reborn at Alton Towers.
The legendary coaster Nemesis, originally opened in 1994, underwent a full retracking and thematic overhaul before returning as Nemesis Reborn.
Burton played a key role in ensuring the ride returned with:
- An updated storyline
- Enhanced theming across Forbidden Valley
- A fresh visual identity for a beloved classic
The project balanced respect for the original ride’s legacy with a modern narrative update, something many long-time fans appreciated.
At the time of writing, details about Burton’s next move have not yet been revealed. However, his experience and creative reputation mean many fans will be watching closely to see where he goes next.
Whether he moves to another theme park company, a creative design firm, or begins independent projects, his impact on Merlin’s parks is already firmly established.

What do you think about this story? You can share your thoughts on our Facebook page or leave a comment using the form below.Good. Hyperia has the worst story line, no theming and the worst queue line out there. And replacing nemesis with nemesis was a shockingly bad idea.
I’m sure after all his successes he now has universal appeal…
