The Netherlands’ most famous theme park, Efteling, has confirmed plans for a major update to its iconic Fairytale Forest, with a brand-new attraction set to open in 2027. The project will introduce the Fairytale Library, officially becoming the park’s 32nd fairy tale.
The new experience will be built in the area currently home to The Chinese Nightingale, a scene that first opened in 1999 and was designed by legendary Efteling creative Ton van de Ven. After more than two decades in operation, the existing installation has reached the end of its technical lifespan, prompting the park to carefully consider its future.
Importantly for long-time fans, The Chinese Nightingale will not be removed from the Fairytale Forest entirely. As one of the park’s foundational fairy tales, it is guaranteed a continued presence. Efteling has confirmed the story will return in a new and respectful form, relocated close to the upcoming Fairytale Library.
The ornamental garden, a peaceful green space that has been part of the Fairytale Forest since 1952, will remain unchanged. This area is particularly popular with visitors looking for a calmer moment away from the park’s larger rides, and its character and familiar features will be preserved.
UK visitors planning a trip to Efteling still have time to experience the current version of The Chinese Nightingale, which will remain open until 8 March. After this date, work will begin to prepare the area for its next chapter.
Efteling continues to be a popular destination for British theme park fans, often compared to a more story-driven, atmospheric alternative to Disneyland Paris. Further details about the Fairytale Library and the redesigned Chinese Nightingale are expected to be revealed in the coming years.
