For millions of theme park fans, Dollywood is more than a collection of rides and attractions. It is the realisation of a dream created by one of America’s most recognisable entertainers, Dolly Parton.
Located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, Dollywood has become one of the world’s best-known theme parks. But its story began long before the Dollywood name appeared above the entrance.
From Rebel Railroad to Dollywood
The site dates back to 1961, when Rebel Railroad opened with a steam train, general store, blacksmith shop and saloon, offering visitors a taste of life in the Smoky Mountains.
The attraction eventually became Silver Dollar City Tennessee after being acquired by Jack and Pete Herschend in 1977. The park continued to grow, adding rides, shows and attractions while maintaining its focus on Appalachian culture and craftsmanship.
Then, in 1986, everything changed.
Dolly Parton, who was born and raised in nearby Sevier County, joined the Herschends as a partner. Silver Dollar City was renamed Dollywood, officially opening under its new identity on May 3, 1986.
Dolly brought more than her name to the project. She brought her love of the Smoky Mountains, her entertainment experience and a vision of creating somewhere that would encourage people to discover the region and its people.
A Theme Park Built Around Dolly’s Roots
From the beginning, Dollywood was designed to feel different from a traditional theme park.
Alongside roller coasters and other attractions, the park placed a major emphasis on Appalachian music, food, craftsmanship and storytelling.
Areas such as Craftsman’s Valley showcase traditional skills, while live entertainment remains one of Dollywood’s defining features.
The park’s connection to Dolly’s family is also visible throughout the resort. The Robert F. Thomas Chapel, for example, has a particularly special connection to the Parton family, as Dr. Robert F. Thomas was the doctor who delivered Dolly.
From Dream to Theme Park Success
Dolly’s involvement helped transform the attraction.
In its first year as Dollywood, the park welcomed around 1.3 million visitors — approximately 75% more than Silver Dollar City’s final season in 1985. Today, Dollywood welcomes millions of guests and has grown to more than twice the size it was when Dolly first joined the Herschends.
Over the decades, the park has developed into a major theme park destination, with major roller coasters, family attractions, festivals, concerts and resorts.
Yet the original idea has remained remarkably consistent: create a place where people can experience the beauty and culture of the Smoky Mountains.
Dolly’s Story Lives On Inside Dollywood
Dolly’s influence can perhaps be seen most clearly in the park’s attractions dedicated to her life.
The Dolly Parton Experience takes guests through her journey from Locust Ridge to international stardom, exploring her career, family, fashion and the dreams that helped shape her life. The attraction also features her tour bus and exhibits exploring her music and personal story.
This makes Dollywood unusual in the theme park industry. Its founder isn’t simply represented through a statue or a character — her life, family, music and Appalachian upbringing are woven throughout the experience.
A Legacy That Will Continue
Dolly Parton’s passing in August 2026 has given Dollywood’s story an even greater significance.
The Dollywood family described her as its “Dreamer-in-Chief” and said her wish was for the park to remain a place of joy, hope and togetherness. The resort has also made clear that her legacy will continue through the experiences created inside its gates.
That legacy is already visible in the park itself.
From the music playing throughout the resort to the craftsmen demonstrating traditional skills, the shows, attractions and stories celebrating Dolly’s life, Dollywood remains closely connected to the woman whose dream helped shape it.
And perhaps that is the most fitting tribute of all.
Dolly Parton didn’t simply put her name on a theme park. She helped create a place designed to share the Smoky Mountains she loved with millions of people — ensuring that her love for her home, her family and her dreams could be experienced by generations of visitors.
Dollywood is now part of Dolly Parton’s lasting legacy, and her dream continues every time the park’s gates open and another family walks through them.
