When thrill-seekers think of smooth rollercoasters in the UK, names like Icon at Blackpool Pleasure Beach or Stealth at Thorpe Park often come to mind. But there’s one under-the-radar contender that deserves serious attention: Millennium at Fantasy Island in Ingoldmells, Lincolnshire.

Millennium first opened in 2000, and at the time, it was a landmark investment for Fantasy Island. With speeds of up to 55 mph, a 150ft height, and three inversions, it offered a world-class thrill experience to seaside parkgoers.

But what stands out the most today — especially for coaster enthusiasts who’ve ridden dozens across the UK — is just how surprisingly smooth Millennium remains, even 25 years after its debut.

What Makes Millennium So Smooth?

Despite being a Vekoma sit-down coaster — a type not always known for its finesse — Millennium avoids the headbanging and jolting often found in older models. Some key factors:

• Track design: Millennium features flowing elements and wide turns, which reduce lateral forces.
• Maintenance: Fantasy Island takes excellent care of the ride, and it shows. The trains glide over the track with minimal rattle.

The result? A consistently enjoyable ride that doesn’t punish your body — a rarity among thrill rides of its age.

While it may not officially hold the title, I firmly believe Millennium is one of the smoothest rollercoasters in the UK, especially considering its age and manufacturer. It’s a testament to both excellent design and attentive maintenance.
