The iconic Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster could have a new operator ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2027, as New York City officials seek proposals for the future operation and maintenance of the historic attraction.
The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation issued a new request for proposals on 2 October 2026, inviting interested businesses to bid for a contract covering the Cyclone and the nearby Parachute Jump landmark in Brooklyn, New York.
The move comes as the legendary wooden roller coaster approaches a major milestone, having first opened in 1927.
New operator sought for historic roller coaster
The city is looking for a company to take responsibility for renovating, operating and maintaining the Coney Island Cyclone, alongside managing and maintaining the nearby Parachute Jump.
The proposed contract could run for up to 20 years, giving the successful bidder a long-term role in looking after two of Coney Island’s best-known landmarks.
However, a change of operator has not yet been confirmed. Central Amusement International, the company that has operated the Cyclone since 2011, could potentially seek to continue its involvement.
Interested businesses have until 13 November 2026 to submit proposals, according to the city’s official procurement notice.
The successful operator will need to address the challenges associated with maintaining a historic wooden roller coaster while preserving its character for future generations.
Cyclone faces financial and maintenance challenges
Although the Cyclone remains one of the world’s most recognisable historic roller coasters, operating an attraction that is almost a century old presents considerable challenges.
Recent reporting has highlighted financial losses associated with the ride, alongside the need for continued investment in its ageing infrastructure.
Any future operator will be expected to undertake renovation and maintenance work while ensuring the attraction continues to meet relevant safety and accessibility requirements.
The opportunity also includes the Parachute Jump, a former amusement ride that has not carried passengers since 1964. The structure remains a prominent landmark on the Coney Island waterfront.
Under the proposed arrangements, there may be opportunities to generate revenue through illuminated displays featuring personal messages, alongside other permitted commercial activities.
The wider contract could also provide scope for improvements to the surrounding amusement offering, although the final plans will depend on the successful proposal and the city’s requirements.
Coney Island Cyclone approaches its 100th birthday
The timing of the tender is particularly significant, with the Cyclone set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027.
Since opening in 1927, the wooden coaster has become synonymous with Coney Island and remains a major attraction for thrill-seekers visiting New York.
Its historic wooden structure and distinctive layout have helped establish it as one of the most famous roller coasters in the United States.
The ride marked its 99th season in 2026, with the traditional opening celebrations helping to begin the countdown towards its centenary.
For amusement park enthusiasts, the possibility of a new operator raises questions about what improvements could be made before the landmark anniversary.
Preserving the Cyclone’s historic identity while investing in its long-term future is likely to be a key consideration for whoever ultimately takes responsibility for the attraction.
Will the Coney Island Cyclone get a new operator?
At this stage, there is no confirmation that the Cyclone will change hands, and the city’s request for proposals does not mean that the existing operator has been replaced.
The bidding process will determine which proposal best meets the city’s requirements for the attraction’s future operation, renovation and maintenance.
With the deadline set for November 2026, further developments are expected as the process progresses.
For now, the focus remains on securing the long-term future of one of America’s most historic roller coasters as it approaches its 100th birthday.
