New Direct Bus Service Between Derby and Alton Towers Launches This Summer

Visitors travelling to Alton Towers Resort from Derby will soon have a brand-new public transport option, with a direct bus service set to launch in July.

The new X80 service will provide a direct connection between Derby and Alton Towers, making it easier for theme park fans to visit the Staffordshire resort without needing a car. The route is scheduled to begin operating on 4 July and will run on days when the theme park is open.

A Welcome Return of Direct Transport

For many years, reaching Alton Towers by public transport from Derby has involved multiple connections or lengthy journeys through other towns. The introduction of the X80 restores a direct link between the city and the UK’s largest theme park, offering a more convenient and affordable travel option.

The service will depart from Derby Bus Station and will also serve Derby Railway Station, providing a useful connection for visitors arriving by train. Along the route, the bus is expected to stop at Hilton, Uttoxeter and Rocester before arriving at Alton Towers Resort.

Ticket Prices and Travel Options

According to information released ahead of the launch, adult return tickets will cost £15, while single fares will be available from £12. Discounted fares are expected for students, and flexible return options will also be available. Passengers can pay on board without needing to pre-book.

The service is expected to provide a significantly cheaper alternative to taxis or ride-sharing services, particularly for visitors making regular trips to the resort.

Boosting Sustainable Travel to Alton Towers

Improving public transport access has long been a topic of discussion among Alton Towers fans. Many visitors rely on cars due to limited transport options, contributing to congestion on busy event days and during seasonal events such as Scarefest.

The launch of the X80 could help reduce some of that reliance on private vehicles while making the park more accessible to younger visitors, students and those without access to a car. Community reactions online have been overwhelmingly positive, with many enthusiasts welcoming the return of a direct Derby-to-Alton Towers link.

What This Means for Theme Park Fans

The new route is particularly good news for enthusiasts visiting multiple times throughout the season, as well as tourists staying in Derby who want a straightforward journey to the resort.

While some fans have noted that the current timetable may not get guests to the park for opening time every day, the convenience of a direct service is still being viewed as a major improvement over previous transport options.

As Alton Towers continues to attract millions of visitors each year, improved transport links such as the X80 could play an important role in making the resort easier to reach and more sustainable for the future.
