On 14 August, just in time for Rollercoaster Day, Alton Towers passholders will have the opportunity to bid for something rather different — the chance to own genuine pieces of the resort’s past.

Among the items going under the hammer is the original Nemesis Ride Operators Panel, complete with a signed certificate from legendary coaster designer John Wardley. Also available will be a Log Flume Boat from The Flume.

And honestly, this is exactly the sort of auction that makes theme park enthusiasts stop and take notice.

The Nemesis panel is the real prize

For many Alton Towers fans, Nemesis isn’t simply another rollercoaster.

When it opened in 1994, Nemesis changed what guests expected from a UK rollercoaster. Its combination of the landscape, theming, inversions and intense ride experience helped establish Alton Towers as one of the UK’s most ambitious theme parks.

The original Nemesis has now gone, replaced by Nemesis Reborn, making surviving pieces from the original attraction even more interesting to collectors.

The idea of having the actual operator panel from Nemesis sitting in your home is pretty incredible.

It isn’t a replica. It isn’t merchandise from the Towers Trading range. It’s a genuine piece of the attraction that once helped operate one of the UK’s most famous rollercoasters.

For a serious Alton Towers enthusiast, that is something money simply can’t replicate.

And then there’s John Wardley’s signature

The signed certificate from John Wardley makes the Nemesis item even more special.

Wardley is one of the most important names in the history of UK theme parks, having played a major role in the creation of some of the country’s most iconic attractions.

For fans who have followed the history of Nemesis, having a piece of memorabilia connected directly to Wardley gives the auction item another layer of significance.

You’re not just buying an old control panel.

You’re buying something connected to the story of Nemesis.

The Flume boat is another fascinating piece

Then there’s the Log Flume Boat from The Flume.

The Flume was another attraction that became part of Alton Towers history, entertaining generations of guests before eventually being removed.

A Flume boat might not have the same legendary status as a Nemesis operator panel, but that’s arguably what makes it interesting.

A new type of theme park collecting?

I think auctions like this could become increasingly interesting to theme park fans.

As attractions are removed and replaced, more historic pieces inevitably become available.

Control panels, ride vehicles, signage, artwork and other pieces of theming can all become highly desirable once the attraction they came from no longer exists.

We’ve already seen how passionate theme park fans can be about preserving the history of attractions.

Perhaps we’re entering a time where theme park collecting becomes just as much about preserving memories as buying merchandise.

And that’s something I really like.
