Home Visitor Guides Which UK Theme Parks Are Best in Bad Weather?

Which UK Theme Parks Are Best in Bad Weather?

Rain in the forecast? That doesn’t necessarily mean your theme park day needs to be cancelled. Here are some of the UK theme parks that can still be worth visiting when the weather isn’t on your side.

British weather can be unpredictable. One minute you’re enjoying sunshine and the next you’re standing in a queue wondering whether your waterproof jacket really is waterproof.

But bad weather doesn’t automatically mean a bad theme park day.

Some UK theme parks have a better selection of indoor rides, dark rides, shows, covered attractions and indoor entertainment than others. While no major outdoor theme park can completely escape heavy rain, choosing the right park can make a big difference.

So, which UK theme parks are best when the weather isn’t playing ball?

1. Alton Towers Resort – One of the Best Choices for a Rainy Day

Alton Towers Resort

Alton Towers is probably one of the first parks we’d consider when the forecast looks wet.

Although the resort is huge and many of its headline attractions are outdoors, it has a surprisingly good selection of indoor and enclosed experiences.

Good options when it’s raining include:

Alton Towers also has a number of attractions where parts of the experience are indoors, meaning you won’t necessarily be standing outside throughout the entire attraction.

The park currently has around 11 indoor attractions according to one 2026 analysis of UK theme park rides, putting it among the stronger options for a major outdoor theme park on a wet day.

Why we’d choose Alton Towers in bad weather

2. LEGOLAND Windsor – Great for Families With Younger Children

LEGOLAND Windsor Resort

LEGOLAND Windsor can be a good choice for families with younger children when the weather is miserable.

It’s important to remember that much of the resort is outdoors, so you won’t be able to avoid the rain completely. However, there are several indoor attractions and experiences that can provide a welcome break.

The resort’s indoor attractions, shops, restaurants and LEGO-themed experiences can be particularly useful when children need to escape the rain for a while.

The key is to plan your route around the weather rather than simply arriving and hoping for the best.

If heavy rain is forecast, head for indoor attractions during the worst periods and save some of the outdoor rides for any breaks in the weather.

3. Chessington World of Adventures – Good for a Mixed Family Day

Chessington World of Adventures Resort

Chessington is another park where a rainy day can still work, particularly for families.

As well as rides, Chessington combines its theme park with a zoo and other attractions, giving you more options than simply going from rollercoaster to rollercoaster.

There are indoor attractions and areas where families can take shelter, while the park’s restaurants and cafés provide useful places to warm up and dry off.

It’s particularly worth considering when you have younger children who may not want to spend an entire day outside in heavy rain.

4. Thorpe Park – Better in Light Rain Than You Might Think

Thorpe Park Resort

Thorpe Park isn’t the first park that springs to mind when thinking about rainy-day theme parks.

The resort itself describes Thorpe Park as being predominantly outdoors, and some rides can be affected by low temperatures, strong winds, thunder, lightning and other weather conditions.

However, don’t automatically rule it out because of rain.

Several major attractions can operate in wet conditions, while attractions such as The Walking Dead: The Ride and Ghost Train provide indoor experiences.

Interestingly, rain can sometimes mean shorter queues, although this isn’t guaranteed.

Thorpe Park also has a rainy-day policy that can potentially allow guests to return if weather significantly affects the majority of rides for a considerable period. Always check the park’s current terms before travelling.

5. Drayton Manor Resort – A Good Option for Families

Drayton Manor Resort

Drayton Manor is another park worth considering if you’re travelling with children.

The park has a mixture of rides and attractions, including indoor experiences such as The Haunting, alongside its Thomas Land attractions.

The park’s ride availability information also makes clear that attractions can be affected by weather and operational requirements.

For families, the combination of rides, indoor attractions and themed areas means you can potentially build a day that doesn’t involve being outside continuously.

6. Blackpool Pleasure Beach – Surprisingly Good in Wet Weather

Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Blackpool Pleasure Beach might seem like an unusual choice for a rainy day, but the park has a major advantage:

Valhalla.

The famous dark ride takes guests indoors and combines water, fire, special effects and theming into one of the UK’s most distinctive theme park experiences.

The park also has indoor areas and attractions that can provide some shelter between rides.

However, Blackpool is still heavily dependent on outdoor attractions, so very wet or windy weather can have an impact on your day.

If you’re visiting Blackpool during a period of showers, however, it can still be worth going — especially if you’re prepared to embrace the weather.

What About Completely Indoor Theme Parks?

If the forecast is showing heavy rain all day, rather than occasional showers, you might want to consider an attraction that is predominantly indoors instead.

The UK doesn’t have many large, fully enclosed traditional theme parks, but there are some excellent alternatives.

Babylon Park, London

Babylon Park

If staying dry is your number-one priority, Babylon Park is one of the strongest options.

The attraction is an indoor amusement park in Camden with rides, games and entertainment under one roof.

It’s obviously much smaller than Alton Towers or Thorpe Park, but that’s exactly why it works so well when the weather is terrible.

Recent UK guides have highlighted Babylon Park as one of the country’s few genuinely indoor theme park-style attractions.

LEGOLAND Discovery Centres

For younger LEGO fans, the LEGOLAND Discovery Centres in Birmingham and Manchester can be excellent rainy-day alternatives.

They’re fully indoors and offer LEGO-themed rides, play areas, activities and attractions.

Which? also highlights the LEGOLAND Discovery Centres as strong options for families with slightly older children.

Does Rain Actually Mean Fewer Queues?

Sometimes — but don’t rely on it.

One of the biggest potential advantages of visiting a theme park in poor weather is that some visitors decide not to go.

That can result in shorter queues, particularly during persistent rain.

However, this isn’t guaranteed.

If you’re visiting during a school holiday, Halloween event or another particularly busy period, the park can still be crowded regardless of the forecast.

Our advice: check the weather, but don’t base your entire decision on predicted queue times.

What Weather Is Too Bad for a Theme Park?

There’s a big difference between rain and dangerous weather.

Light rain or showers may have little impact on your visit.

Heavy rain can make the day uncomfortable, while strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning and very low temperatures can result in ride closures.

Thorpe Park, for example, states that some attractions can close because of sub-5°C temperatures, high winds, thunder or lightning.

Other theme parks have their own individual operating restrictions.

Before travelling, always check the park’s official website and ride availability information.

The Best Theme Park for a Rainy Day?

For a traditional UK theme park, Alton Towers would be one of our top choices for a wet-weather visit.

It has a large selection of attractions, indoor experiences and places to take shelter, meaning you aren’t completely dependent on the weather staying dry.

For families with younger children, LEGOLAND Windsor and Chessington are worth considering.

And if the forecast is showing absolutely relentless rain, forget the outdoor theme park altogether and consider an indoor attraction such as Babylon Park or a LEGOLAND Discovery Centre.

Ultimately, the best rainy-day theme park is the one that gives you plenty of things to do between the showers.

And remember: sometimes the rain can actually make a theme park visit more memorable. There’s something strangely satisfying about riding a rollercoaster in the rain!

UK Theme Park Spy Tip

Don’t just check the rain forecast. Check the wind speed and temperature too.

Rain is often manageable. Strong winds and thunderstorms are much more likely to affect ride availability.

And if you’re visiting a park in poor weather, pack a waterproof jacket, spare socks and shoes if possible — you’ll thank yourself later!
