In a landmark decision that marks a major milestone for UK tourism and economic growth, planning permission for Universal Studios Great Britain has officially been approved by the UK Government — with the Development Consent Order (DCO) set to come into force on 12 January 2026. This decision means that construction on the long‑awaited Universal theme park and resort in Bedford, Bedfordshire can begin without further delay.

What’s Been Approved and What It Means
The planning consent has been granted through a Special Development Order (SDO) laid before Parliament by the Government — a mechanism that allows major national infrastructure projects to bypass some of the traditional local planning stages. This means Universal can proceed directly into preparation and construction once the order comes into force on 12 January 2026.
The SDO covers the proposed Entertainment Resort Complex at Kempston Hardwick, Bedfordshire, on the site of a former brickworks. It authorises:
- A world‑class theme park with immersive lands and attractions
- Visitor accommodation, including hotels
- Retail, dining and entertainment facilities
- Supporting infrastructure and landscaping
- Major transport enhancements to support visitor access
This means that, subject to conditions set out in the order, the development has full legal planning permission to be built when the order takes effect. With construction due to kick off soon after, 2026 will be a historic year for the project.
