If you’re planning a UK theme park day out, two names that offer very different experiences are Alton Towers and Flamingo Land.
Both parks have plenty of rides, family attractions and big rollercoasters, but which one is actually better?
The answer depends on what you want from your visit. If you’re looking for world-class rollercoasters and a huge resort experience, Alton Towers has the edge. If you want a combination of theme park rides and animals, Flamingo Land offers something quite different.
So, let’s put the two head-to-head.
Rollercoasters: Alton Towers wins
For serious coaster enthusiasts, this is probably the easiest category to decide.
Alton Towers is home to more than 40 rides and attractions, including major coasters such as The Smiler, Nemesis Reborn, Wicker Man, Oblivion and Rita. The park also introduced Toxicator and Bluey the Ride for 2026, adding even more variety for thrill-seekers and younger visitors.
The Smiler remains one of the park’s signature attractions, while Nemesis Reborn gives visitors the chance to experience the reborn version of the legendary Nemesis coaster.
Flamingo Land certainly shouldn’t be dismissed, though.
Its coaster line-up includes Sik, Kumali, Mumbo Jumbo and Velocity. Sik opened in 2022 and features ten inversions, while Kumali reaches 56mph and includes four inversions. Velocity is particularly unusual, being the UK’s first and only motorbike launch coaster, accelerating from 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds.
Winner: Alton Towers
Flamingo Land has some fantastic coasters, but Alton Towers offers the stronger overall collection and a greater variety of major thrill experiences.
Family rides: It’s closer than you might think
Alton Towers has become much more than a thrill-seeker’s park.
CBeebies Land provides a dedicated area for younger children, while attractions such as Gangsta Granny: The Ride, The Curse at Alton Manor, the Skyride and numerous family attractions mean there is plenty to do between the bigger coasters.
The arrival of Bluey the Ride in 2026 has strengthened the park’s offering for younger guests even further.
Flamingo Land also has a broad family line-up, with attractions including Flamingo 1, Voodoo, Balloon Race, Splash Battle, Twistosaurus and several children’s attractions.
This is where Flamingo Land can be particularly appealing to families who want something different from a traditional theme park.
Winner: Draw
Alton Towers probably has the bigger overall selection, but Flamingo Land has enough family attractions to compete strongly.

Animals: Flamingo Land wins easily
This is the category where Flamingo Land has a huge advantage.
Unlike Alton Towers, Flamingo Land combines a theme park with a zoo. The resort says its zoo is home to 140 species of reptiles, mammals and birds, giving visitors the opportunity to see a wide variety of animals during their visit.
That means a day at Flamingo Land isn’t simply about queuing for rides.
You can move between rollercoasters, family attractions and animal exhibits, creating a very different experience from a conventional theme park.
If your family has children who love animals as much as they love rides, Flamingo Land could therefore be the better choice.
Winner: Flamingo Land
The overall atmosphere
This is a difficult one because both parks have very different personalities.
Alton Towers feels like a huge theme park resort. Its combination of themed areas, the historic Towers, extensive gardens and major attractions gives the park a strong sense of scale. The Skyride even allows guests to travel between areas while taking in views across the resort.
There is also a strong emphasis on storytelling and theming around many of the major attractions.
Flamingo Land has a more unusual identity. One moment you can be riding a major rollercoaster and the next you’re walking around the zoo or watching an animal presentation.
It is arguably this combination that makes Flamingo Land stand out.
Winner: Alton Towers for theming; Flamingo Land for variety
Which has the better day out?
For a dedicated theme park enthusiast, we’d probably choose Alton Towers.
The park offers a huge selection of rides, major rollercoasters, themed areas and attractions, while its resort facilities make it possible to turn a single visit into a full weekend. Alton Towers currently offers several accommodation options, including themed hotels, the Enchanted Village, Stargazing Pods and CBeebies Land Hotel.
Flamingo Land, however, can provide a fantastic full day out because you’re not relying entirely on rides.
The zoo adds another major element to the visit, and there is also live entertainment throughout the resort.
Winner: Alton Towers
But Flamingo Land is arguably the more unusual experience.
Which is better for thrill seekers?
Alton Towers.
There isn’t much argument here.
If your main reason for visiting is to ride rollercoasters, Alton Towers has the stronger line-up.
Nemesis Reborn, The Smiler, Wicker Man, Oblivion and Rita provide very different experiences, from intense inversions to major drops and launches.
Flamingo Land’s Sik, Kumali, Mumbo Jumbo and Velocity are certainly capable of delivering serious thrills, but the overall depth of Alton Towers’ thrill offering is difficult to beat.
Winner: Alton Towers
Which is better for younger children?
This one is much more difficult.
Alton Towers has CBeebies Land, which is a major advantage for families with very young children. The introduction of Bluey the Ride in 2026 has made the area even more attractive.
Flamingo Land also has plenty aimed at younger visitors, including children’s attractions, family rides and animal experiences.
If your child is obsessed with CBeebies, Bluey or Thomas-style theme park experiences, Alton Towers could be the obvious choice.
If they love animals just as much as rides, Flamingo Land may win.
Winner: Draw
Which offers the most variety?
This is where Flamingo Land deserves more credit.
Alton Towers has rides, gardens, entertainment, accommodation and the Waterpark, creating an enormous resort experience.
But Flamingo Land combines a theme park and zoo in one destination.
You could spend the morning seeing animals, the afternoon riding rollercoasters and the evening enjoying entertainment.
That combination is difficult for Alton Towers to replicate.
Winner: Flamingo Land
Alton Towers vs Flamingo Land: Our Verdict
So, which is better?
For us, Alton Towers wins overall.
It has the stronger rollercoaster line-up, more major attractions and a more complete theme park experience. With more than 40 rides and attractions and attractions ranging from CBeebies Land to world-famous thrill rides, there is an enormous amount to experience.
But that doesn’t mean Flamingo Land is the loser.
Far from it.
Flamingo Land offers something that Alton Towers simply can’t: the combination of a theme park and zoo. Its impressive collection of thrill rides, including Sik, Kumali and Velocity, means enthusiasts still have plenty to get excited about, while the zoo gives families another reason to visit.

Which should you visit?
Choose Alton Towers if:
- You love rollercoasters.
